I’ll be playing a couple of shows at the end of the month, one of which will be my first showing in NYC in almost a year. Both shows will be with NYC electronic pop provocateur Poingly. The DC show will also feature DC post-hardcore quartet the Escape Artist. These will be my first full sets of 2010 and should be appropriately exciting.
I was recently admitted into DC folk/punk/indie/whatever music collective Spelling for Bees. The Bees have 50+ members skilled at a variety of conventional and unconventional instruments. They put on monthly shows in the District presenting the members’ creative talents as they perform original songs along with interpretations on specific themes and moods. My first time out as part of the swarm will be on Tuesday February 2 at the Velvet Lounge, where we will be paying tribute to Minor Threat, Fugazi, and all things Dischord related. I called dibs on “Target”.

I kick-started my new year playing a NYE house party in DC. It was appropriately loud and debaucherous. The room was crowded and my set was solid. The mulled wine and Miller High Life flowed freely and my encore performance of FBB’s ¨Hot Burrito #2¨ could be heard several blocks away. Some folks called it the best Justyn with a Y show ever. I was touched. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it an extra special night!
Lots of news this update contains! I’ll keep it in bullet form for readability’s sake.
My friend Jack from Flying Houses wrote some kind words about Swans mixed in with a fairly complete Justyn with a Y history lesson. You can read it here.
I added a new link to my Friends list for Working Runner, my buddy Dickson’s blog. He posts about running and bluegrass.
Two new shows coming up in February! I will be playing back to back nights at the end of the month in NYC and DC. I don’t have the full details yet but I do know I’ll be playing one or both nights with very good Justynwithayfriend and NYC’s best live performer Poingly. More info on this soon!
Last but not least, I am in the process of compiling material for a new Justyn with a Y album to be released later in 2010. I have between 5 and 7 songs ready and 4 or 5 more in the works. The working title is Big Really. I hope to have it printed and ready for sale in the fall.
What you can do to help is send me awesome old cowboy pictures for the album artwork. Interpret that however you wish – you can send me awesome pictures of old cowboys, old pictures of awesome cowboys, whatever you think would work. Email your submissions to justynwithay@gmail.com.
Are we clear? No? Then feel free to send me your questions, and if we need to work one on one to make sense of this crazy mess then we will. The bottom line is I need your cowboys and I don’t care how I get them. Please help.
…is also going to be the first show of 2010. I’ll be playing a friend’s New Year’s Eve party in Washington, DC this Thursday. I’ll even have new songs at this one that weren’t written before the last show. I’m a writing junkie (except when it comes to this blog).
I will be making a very important announcement next weekend about Justyn with a Y in 2010. I can’t tell you what it’s going to be yet, just that it will be VERY and IMPORTANT. In the meantime, enjoy this classic song by avant-glam legends Sparks.
The full Justyn with a Y discography is now available for streaming and download at http://justynwithay.bandcamp.com. This means all of you have the option of getting your very own copies of the music as quickly as your internet connection will allow, and you won’t have to pay for shipping either. Swans is going for $0.56 a track or $5.00 for the full album. As always, the Just Like Happiness EP is free.
Of course if you prefer a CD copy of Swans with art and liner notes and everything, you can still purchase one at a show or order through PayPal. The cost is the same as for the download, but PayPal orders include an extra $2 for shipping.
