Grad School Apps/Unrelated Hiatus

Some of you have been asking when the more personal posts will get here. Well, here’s a personal life update – I’ve been working on grad school apps and hopefully by this time next year I’ll be working towards a Master’s degree in ethnomusicology. It’s something I’ve been threatening to do for a few years now so I’m happy to have stopped waffling about it and finally made a decision. I’m doing my first campus visit next week and will follow with updates as this unfolds.

I’m 3 songs away from finishing writing the material for Big Really. I know I’m running a couple of months behind schedule, but those of you who have caught the recent live shows and heard the new stuff know that it’s going to be good.

I’m going to take a brief hiatus from performing until I’m done with the rest of the songs. That might be in 3 weeks or 3 months. Or maybe 3 days. (Really though, no. It’ll happen sometime between the first two numbers).

But it will be DONE and it will be done SOON because I want “Scenery Changes Slow” tracked and released just as much as the rest of you.

Summersummer

means sun and warmth and ocean swimming but alas no vacations. Yeah I got work too. Here, go to these. I promise they’ll make you feel better.

I’ll be coming back at Stacy’s Coffee Parlor in Falls Church, VA at the end of July for a special acoustic set with musician, teacher, blogger, and good friend Simon Chaos. Simon will be doing a special classical guitar set. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Unamplified guitar sets at a parlor in the evening… sounds like wine-tasting music.” Well, you would be wrong about that because Stacy’s does not serve any alcoholic drinks. So, gentle reader, the joke is on YOU.

Stacy’s shows are always FREE and admit ALL AGES.

Then in September I’ll be playing in DC proper at the Red and the Black on H St. NE. The Peach-Stealing Monkeys will be kicking things off with their sprightly folk-jazz. You may remember the Monkeys from my May show at the Velvet Lounge when they played in slightly reduced form as the Fillers. This time they’ll be out in full force… and they’ll have hemiolas. Human rights activist and singer/songwriter Peter Maybarduk will close out the night. Maybarduk worked with DC legend J. Robbins on his last album, the latin-flavored No Hay Pueblo Vencido. I’m fairly impressed and ready for an exciting night. 9 PM marks the time that a-doings will be a-transpiring.

In prior collabo news, I’m happy to announce that the Dracula Driveway EP recently got an official release through Brooklyn Supermartyr Records! Find it online at iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, or just go to the label website here:

Yay music for sale!

This summer I’m going to experiment with a new more personal blog format. I’ll still post music news and show dates, but I’ll be mixing in some less cut and dry posts about music, books, and whatever else I’m digging at the moment. I’m thinking about putting up the first installment in the next 2 weeks or so, so keep your eyes open!

You know what I love? Free all-ages shows. Especially when they’re with old friends. Especially when those old friends happen to be incontrovertible musical geniuses. Saturday June 5th I’ll be motoring up to NYC to play a show with my old pals Avery Brooks and Abe Pollack. Believe me when I say these guys are on a completely different wavelength than most and are no doubt planning up some wildly creative mind-melters.

The following Friday I’ll be back in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed to play a show with Future Folk Records superheroes Green Grocer and Brooklyn reverbatrician Invisible Circle. This show might get a little bit intense and maybe just maybe a little bit awesome.

The first show will be part of Arts in Bushwick‘s Open Studios Festival with the Way Out Collective at their nondenominational studio in Brooklyn. In addition to hosting the event, the collective will be serving free food and drinks. The second will be at Stacy’s Coffee Shop in Falls Church, VA. This coffee shop is also nondenominational, however they will require money for use of their sustenance accessories.

Note: You may remember Abe from our duo last year, Dracula Driveway. Why not use this as an opportunity to revisit some of our classic collaborations like this one and this one?

Show Recap/SfB Residency Night

2010 is shaping up to be a good year. Monday and Tuesday’s jaunts up and down I-95 had some of the biggest, tightest, and most fun shows I’ve ever done. It was excellent seeing so many old friends and it was genuinely energizing to play in front of so many new faces. Big thanks to Cosmic Vibes and the End of Irony for helping get the word out! Special thanks to Poingly for joining me on this East Coast yo-yo and to the Escape Artist for letting us open things up in DC.

I’m currently looking to take a few easy weeks to write some more material for Big Really. In the meantime, you can catch me backing up the Bees at our next residency night this Tuesday.

Justyn with a Y joins Spelling for Bees

I was recently admitted into DC folk/punk/indie/whatever  music collective Spelling for Bees. The Bees have 50+ members skilled at a variety of conventional and unconventional instruments. They put on monthly shows in the District presenting the members’ creative talents as they perform original songs along with interpretations on specific themes and moods. My first time out as part of the swarm will be on Tuesday February 2 at the Velvet Lounge, where we will be paying tribute to Minor Threat, Fugazi, and all things Dischord related. I called dibs on “Target”.

Happy 2010!

I kick-started my new year playing a NYE house party in DC. It was appropriately loud and debaucherous. The room was crowded and my set was solid. The mulled wine and Miller High Life flowed freely and my encore performance of FBB’s ¨Hot Burrito #2¨ could be heard several blocks away. Some folks called it the best Justyn with a Y show ever. I was touched. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it an extra special night!

Lots of news this update contains! I’ll keep it in bullet form for readability’s sake.

  • My friend Jack from Flying Houses wrote some kind words about Swans mixed in with a fairly complete Justyn with a Y history lesson. You can read it here.
  • I added a new link to my Friends list for Working Runner, my buddy Dickson’s blog. He posts about running and bluegrass.
  • Two new shows coming up in February! I will be playing back to back nights at the end of the month in NYC and DC. I don’t have the full details yet but I do know I’ll be playing one or both nights with very good Justynwithayfriend and NYC’s best live performer Poingly. More info on this soon!
  • Last but not least, I am in the process of compiling material for a new Justyn with a Y album to be released later in 2010. I have between 5 and 7 songs ready  and 4 or 5 more in the works. The working title is Big Really. I hope to have it printed and ready for sale in the fall.
  • What you can do to help is send me awesome old cowboy pictures for the album artwork. Interpret that however you wish – you can send me awesome pictures of old cowboys, old pictures of awesome cowboys, whatever you think would work. Email your submissions to justynwithay@gmail.com.
  • Are we clear? No? Then feel free to send me your questions, and if we need to work one on one to make sense of this crazy mess then we will. The bottom line is I need your cowboys and I don’t care how I get them. Please help.
